Denver Fred Wendorf, Henderson-Morrison Professor of Prehistory Emeritus, became in 1987 the first faculty member at SMU to be elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Trained in archaeology at Harvard University, Professor Wendorf spent the early years of his career as a museum archaeologist. He joined the faculty at SMU in 1964 and quickly moved to establish a premier Department of Anthropology. His contributions to our understanding of early human life in the New World as well as the prehistory of North Africa are far-reaching and influential. His efforts were recognized in 1996 by the University of Pennsylvania with the Lucy Wharton Drexel Medal for Archaeological Achievement, one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon an anthropologist archaeologist. Blending public activities with his scientific investigations, Professor Wendorf has been a sustained and committed advocate for the preservation of archaeological records and collections for future generations of scientists and for humanity. For a lifetime of scientific achievements in the field of archaeology, SMU is honored to award Denver Fred Wendorf the degree of Doctor of Science, honoris causa.
